In the U.S., National Grandparents’ Day is held each year on the Sunday following Labor Day, with Labor Day celebrated on the first Monday in September. In 2022, National Grandparents’ Day falls on Sunday September 11th.
A day for grandchildren of all ages to honor and celebrate their grandparents, Grandparents’ Day can trace its roots back to the late 1970s. Today, many families offer gifts and cards as well as enjoying a range of inter-generational activities. Schools may feature special events in honor of grandparents, including inviting grandma and grandpa to commemorative assemblies, art, writing or story-telling activities related to grandparents and making personalized cards to send to grandparents.
Gifts for Grandparents
Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for your grandparents from yourself or to gift to your own parents on behalf of your younger children, you’re sure to want something that truly conveys your love and appreciation.
Choosing great gifts for grandparents can be a challenge. After all, at their time in life there is probably very little that they need, and they’ve likely had many years of receiving gifts from their own children for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays and other special occasions. Nevertheless, it’s still possible to gift your grandparents something heartfelt and meaningful.
Here are some of our recommended ideas of excellent gifts for grandparents:
Time
For many people, the gift of time is one of the most precious gifts of all. You could plan to visit your grandparents, or take the kids to visit their grandparents, and spend quality time together. Perhaps treat your grandmother and grandfather to a nice meal in their favorite restaurant, take them to see a show or enjoy a family excursion.
If distance is too great for a physical visit, you can spend time catching up with your grandparents on the phone. For tech-savvy grandparents, a video call can be more interactive and feel more personal. There’s also a terrific array of fun online activities younger children can enjoy in real-time with their grandparents if they can’t physically meet up face to face.
Forget-Me-Nots
As the official flower of National Grandparents’ Day in the U.S., forget-me-nots can be a perfect gift for grandparents. While the spring-blooming plant may be difficult to find in September, you can find numerous items decorated with the pretty blue flower. Grandmothers may appreciate, for example, a floral scarf, blouse, necklace or dish towel, while grandfathers might like a tie pin, beer glass or notepad adorned with a discreet forget-me-not. Artwork, mugs and t-shirts featuring forget-me-nots are other options to consider, or small children could craft their own forget-me-not mementoes and drawings.
Consumable Gifts
Gifts that grandparents can eat or drink can be ideal ways to show your appreciation, especially if it provides a little treat that they wouldn’t normally have. Edible gifts are suitable for grandparents of any gender and age and are also terrific gifts for your grandparents to share and enjoy together.
